http://www2.2wf.com/images/2011/Product_reviews/misc_products/_MG_8113_small.jpgOur Project FJR1300’s seat was starting to look a little rough from spending time in the Florida sun so we contacted the folks at Sargent about a replacement. Sargent has been in business since, well long enough that by this time they should be a General (was that lame or what?). Anyway, they’ve been in business long enough to know how to build a quality motorcycle seat.

Our World Sport Performance Seat arrived with a CarbonFX insert and metallic silver welt which will tie in nicely with the Black/Red/Silver paint job we have put on the bike.

I was first impressed by the weight of the seat as it didn’t seem to weigh much more than the stock seat even though it was wider and looked more substantial. Sargent has a http://www2.2wf.com/images/2011/Product_reviews/misc_products/_MG_8116_small.jpglightweight PolyTech seat pan that is used along with Super Cell Atomic Foam in the construction of their World Sport Performance Seats. I’m sure this all means something really important in the “scientific and engineering” circles but to be quite honest I didn’t care enough to find out what the molecular make-up of the seat was. All I cared about was how it felt when riding and how it looked when my butt wasn’t in it. I know I’m shallow but I’ll bet most of you feel the same way about seats so don’t judge me.

There’s just one last thing to mention before sticking the seat on the bike and checking out the comfort and looks factor; storage. Under the front section of the seat (the FJR has a 2-piece seat) Sargent has put a storage compartment with a hinged door. This compartment is big enough to hold papers, or a soft taco and you could probably fit a hamster in there if you ran over it and squished it first. Please don’t do that. I was just joking. Under the rear seat section Sargent has put a removable storage tube which can be used http://www2.2wf.com/images/2011/Product_reviews/misc_products/hamster_small.jpgto hold even more papers or a tool pouch, a flat repair kit, a burrito or even an unsquished hamster. Just kidding again as the hamster wouldn’t be able to breathe and that would be cruel – besides the hamster would probably eat your burrito. Anyone else hungry for Mexican food?

So the Sargent World Sport Performance Seats comes with built in storage, a lightweight seat pan that sounds like a technical school and seat foam that sounds like it might be the basic stuff which all life evolved from, but is the seat comfortable?

The Sargent World Sport Performance Seat (I’m getting really tired of writing that all out) is slightly wider, longer, and more “saddle” shaped than the stock FJR seat. I was concerned that the reach to the bars would be longer and I wouldn’t be able to move around on the seat as much as I liked. Turns out that I needn’t have worried as I could move around just fine and, while the reach to the bars is a little longer (if you are sitting all the way back on the seat), it doesn’t bother me at all.

I’ve ridden the bike on a 500 mile freeway blitz with the stock seat before (stopping only for gas and lunch) so the Sargent seat had some big shoes to fill on the comfort side. Apparently Super Cell Atomic Foam is pretty comfortable stuff. You can see it through some of the holes in the seat pan and it feels almost like a firm version of that memory foam that everyone raves about. I have put about 1k miles on the bike since the seat swap and I can definitely tell the difference between stock (as comfortable as it was) and the Sargent seat. I think my butt should be happy with the swap in the long-term.

http://www2.2wf.com/images/2011/Product_reviews/misc_products/_MG_8119_small.jpgOne place where I did have some concerns is the passenger pillion. Similar to the Corbin seat I had put on the bike when I first got it (and took off and sold 500 miles later), the passenger section is shorter back-to-front then the stock pillion. Add in the “saddle” shape and I thought it may cause a passenger’s inner thighs to rest uncomfortably on the raised welt and rear of the rider’s seat. Turns out that, at least on shorter trips around town, the rear seat is at least as comfortable as the stock seat and should be fine on long trips too.

Changing out your stock seat isn’t a cheap proposition. If you think your stock seat is comfortable then justifying the expense becomes even harder. Take it from me, if your butt spends a lot of time in the saddle a Sargent World Sport Performance Seat can make a huge difference no matter how comfortable you think the stock seat is.

The cost of a Sargent World Sport Performance Seat varies depending upon the bike and what options you decide to get (heated seats, etc..) but the basic seat for a 2003-2005 FJR 1300 with a silver welt will run you about $570 (on Sargent's website).
